Where is Oman located?
You might be wondering where Oman is actually located. Oman is located in the southeastern part of the Arabian Peninsula in Southwest Asia. It’s bordered by the United Arab Emirates to the northwest, Saudi Arabia to the west, and Yemen to the southwest.
To the south, Oman has a coastline along the Arabian Sea, while its easternmost point extends into the Gulf of Oman.
Muscat, the capital city, is situated along the northeastern coast of Oman. To get to Oman I would recommend flying into Muscat.
Is Oman worth visiting?
Oman is definitely worth visiting. Although it’s become more popular in recent years, it’s not yet discovered by mass tourism. Because of this, it still maintains its authentic and unspoiled charm.
Compared to neighboring countries in the Gulf region, Oman has taken a more measured approach to tourism development, focusing on preserving its cultural heritage and natural landscapes. From desert landscapes to refreshing wadi’s, Oman has a lot to offer.
Is Oman safe to travel to?
Oman is widely regarded as a safe and secure destination for travelers. Generally, Oman is a safe destination to travel to. During my time here I’ve never felt unsafe. However, it’s always important to keep in mind general safety measures while traveling.
Stay aware of your surroundings, keep your belongings secure, and follow any local guidelines or advisories. By respecting local customs and traditions, you’ll enhance your travel experience and you will have more positive interactions with the locals.
How many days in Oman?
This really depends. You could easily get a taste of Oman by just visiting for a few days, however there is so much to do here that I would recommend staying for at least a week.
If you prefer to take your time while traveling, I would even recommend to stay for around ten days to two weeks in Oman.

The best things to do during your holiday in Oman
So, what should you do during your holiday in Oman? Here are some of the best things to do during your travels in Oman:
Visit the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque
This is without a doubt one of the most beautiful mosques I have ever seen. I highly recommend visiting this beautiful mosque during your holiday in Oman. The mosque is an architectural masterpiece that stands as a symbol of Oman’s rich Islamic heritage and spiritual devotion.
Located in the heart of Muscat, this grand mosque is a testament to the country’s religious traditions.
Keep in mind to dress modest when visiting religious sites. If you visit this mosque, make sure to cover your legs and shoulders, as modest attire is required. If you’re a woman, also cover your hair.
Go hiking in the Hajar Mountains
To experience Oman’s natural beauty, venture into the majestic Hajar Mountains. Put on your hiking boots and conquer Jebel Shams, the country’s highest peak. As you hike to its summit, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking vistas of rugged canyons and deep gorges.
Explore Old Muscat
Get ready to embark on a journey through time as you venture into the captivating Old Quarter of Muscat, located at the eastern tip of the modern city. As you wander through the labyrinthine streets of the Old Quarter, you’ll be captivated by its ancient architecture and traditional ambiance.
The Old Quarter is not just a place frozen in time; it’s a vibrant hub where you can witness the authentic essence of Muscat. No visit to the Old Quarter is complete without exploring Mutrah Souq, a buzzing marketplace that has thrived here for centuries.
This marketplace is one of the oldest Arabian markets in the world. Lose yourself in its narrow alleys, filled with colors, spices, and traditional Omani handicrafts.
Beyond the winding streets and vibrant markets, the Old Quarter reveals its historical treasures. Visit the Bait Al Zubair Museum, which showcases the rich heritage and traditions of Oman, offering a deeper understanding of the country’s cultural legacy.
Experience the Wahiba Sands
For those seeking an adrenaline rush, a visit to the Wahiba Sands is a must. Here you can embark on a thrilling desert safari. Feel the adrenaline as you ride over golden dunes in a 4×4 vehicle, experience the joy of sand boarding down steep slopes, and witness the magical sunset transform the landscape.
Discover the Daymaniyat Islands Nature Reserve
Bring your snorkeling gear and dive into the crystal clear waters of the Daymaniyat Islands Nature Reserve. Explore vibrant coral reefs teeming with colorful marine life, from tropical fish to graceful turtles. It’s a snorkeler’s paradise that will take your breath away. If you’re interested in snorkeling in Oman, have a look over here.
Swim in a wadi
I would highly recommend swimming in a wadi while you’re in Oman. Such as the Wadi Shab: This oasis-like paradise is a favorite among locals. Trek through the dramatic canyons and reach the crystal-clear pools. Take a dip in the emerald waters and immerse yourself in its serenity.
Another beautiful wadi to discover is Wadi Tiwi. As you navigate through its winding paths, you’ll encounter turquoise pools that are nestled between dramatic rock formations. The contrasting colors make it a gorgeous spot for a cooling swim.
Explore the Omani cuisine
Last but not least, indulge in the flavors of Omani cuisine. Sample traditional dishes such as shuwa (slow-cooked lamb), mashuai (spit-roasted whole fish), and delectable dates. Take a culinary journey through local markets and restaurants, tasting the authentic flavors that define Omani gastronomy.
Visit the Royal Opera House in Muscat
The Royal Opera House is a cultural gem located in the heart of Muscat, Oman. This architectural masterpiece is not only a venue for world-class performances but also a symbol of Oman’s arts and cultural heritage.
Sultan Qaboos has been an admirer of classical music and ordered the building of the opera house in 2001. Eventually, the opera house officially opened in 2011. The Royal Opera House is a must-visit during your holiday in Oman, especially if you’re into arts and culture.
In conclusion
Oman is a country not yet discovered by mass tourism. Yet, it’s a destination very worthy of exploring. You can swim in wadi’s, visit Omani deserts, taste its rich cuisine and experience its culture.
You can also go hiking in the Hajar Mountains or you can visit its majestic Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. There is a lot to do in Oman. Therefore, I would highly recommend going on holiday in Oman, especially since it’s not yet on the general tourist radar.
