So, how long should you stay in Alkmaar? A weekend in Alkmaar is perfect. However, if you want to use Alkmaar as your base to explore more of the Netherlands, then I would suggest spending 5 to 7 days here.

There’s enough things to do here and there are also some lovely restaurants. From Alkmaar you can also easily go on day trips to Amsterdam, Haarlem or Castricum.

Is Alkmaar worth visiting?

Alkmaar is definitely worth visiting. It’s a smaller city than Amsterdam with lesser tourists, however there are still loads of things to do and it’s home to lovely scenery. There’s a historical city centre, ideal for shopping and sightseeing. It’s also home to some great restaurants.

How to get to Alkmaar?

Alkmaar is located in the province North-Holland (in Dutch: Noord-Holland). If you’re coming from Amsterdam, there are several options to reach Alkmaar. The most convenient way is to travel by train, which takes around 30-40 minutes one way.

Perhaps you’re straight away coming from Schiphol Airport. If that’s the case, then you can take a train to Amsterdam Sloterdijk. From there, you can switch trains to a direct train to Alkmaar. You can check the train times via NS.nl or via an app called 9292.

In total it will take a little more than 50 minutes to reach Alkmaar from Schiphol Airport, which I think is really quick!

How to get around Alkmaar?

Alkmaar is a very walkable city, hence you won’t need a car to get around. If you want, you can rent a bike to explore the city. During your stay here you can also rent a boat to admire the city from the water.
